One of the things we love at Gilton Valeo is knowing that we are responsible for shaping the careers of our team members.  The employee/employer relationship is of utmost importance and we strive to provide a caring and innovative environment that fosters teamwork, excellence and personal evolution.

On that note, here’s a little Q&A with some of our newest recruits!

Xueying Zhang

Why did you become a lawyer?
I became a lawyer because I developed a deep fascination with the logical intricacies of law.  Although it wasn’t my initial career choice, once I delved into studying and working in the field, I became captivated by the fantasy of unravelling the underlying reasoning behind legal principles.  Navigating through legislation and uncovering the rationale behind each rule became an exhilarating pursuit for me.

The best part of your job?
The best part of my job as a lawyer is the exposure it grants me to diverse industries.  In my previous role as an in-house counsel for multinational companies, I had the opportunity to explore corporate law and international mobility across various jurisdictions.  However, what truly drew me back to the immigration industry was the chance to work with remarkable companies and global talents from different sectors.  I am fortunate to have clients ranging from ICT, Digitech, aged care, and recruitment, coming from all corners of the world.  It’s a constant source of inspiration and fulfilment to contribute to their legal needs.

If you could write a book about your life, what would the title be and why?
If I were to write a book about my life, I would title it “There is no true life within the false life.”  This quote by Theodor W. Adorno captures the essence of the impossibility of finding personal happiness amidst societal challenges and disruptions.  It serves as a reminder for me to reflect on what truly matters and strive for a life aligned with my core values.

What advice would you give to your teenage self?
The advice I would give to my teenage self is to trust myself and pursue my passions fearlessly.  I would emphasise the importance of staying true to one’s own desires and ambitions, assuring myself that by following my passions, I would eventually become the person I aspired to be.

Favourite food?
My favourite food is watermelon cake! It has become a mandatory treat for me every birthday.  If you ever find yourself in Sydney or Melbourne, you must try it!

What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?
Whenever I’m having a bad day, I take a moment to rest and clear my mind.  Once I’ve rejuvenated myself, I reflect on the events of the day, seeking understanding and learning from the experience.  This process helps me regain perspective and approach challenges with renewed energy.

What energizes you outside of work?
Outside of work, I find energy and joy through two unexpected sources: K-pop and Disney.  Immersing myself in the catchy melodies and captivating performances of K-pop artists brings a sense of excitement and enthusiasm to my day.  Likewise, indulging in the enchanting world of Disney movies and storytelling provides a much-needed escape and a touch of nostalgia.

What’s a trip that changed you, and why?
One trip that had a profound impact on me was when I went to the United States for an exchange program during the third year of my bachelor’s degree.  This journey was transformative in many ways.  It was my first exposure to observing court proceedings, where I witnessed intense cross-examinations reminiscent of those depicted in movies.  Additionally, travelling alone allowed me to take charge of planning my itinerary, discovering hidden gems within bustling cities like New York, and even facing unexpected challenges such as navigating a storm and dealing with motion sickness.  This trip broadened my horizons, bolstered my independence, and left an indelible mark on my perspective.

What’s one of your favourite memories from the past year?
One of my favourite memories from the past year is the birth of my baby girl.  Welcoming a new life into the world filled me with immeasurable joy and a profound sense of purpose.  It was a milestone that deepened my appreciation for the beauty and wonder of life.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?
If a movie were made about my life, I would love the opportunity to play myself.  It would be an incredible chance to be involved in the movie industry, ensuring the authenticity of my story and experiences.  Portraying my own journey would allow me to convey the passion and creativity that have driven me as a lawyer, giving viewers a genuine glimpse into my life’s triumphs and challenges.

Rebecca Nguyen

Why did you become a lawyer?
I decided to be a lawyer as I had an inescapable interest in current social issues and was an effective advocate.  I was fortunate enough to exercise this passion in immigration law as it offers intellectual challenges while allowing me the opportunity to assist people in our global community.

The best part of your job?
Helping people at a major turning point in their lives – from reuniting loved ones to pursuing career goals and forging new networks.  Working with diverse individuals has expanded my knowledge of unique experiences, giving me a deeper understanding of the different cultures around me.

If you could write a book about your life, what would the title be and why?
Rebecca: An Autobiography.  It is an apt title.

What advice would you give to your teenage self?
Trust the process.

Favourite food?
Hainanese chicken rice.  It is a simple and balanced meal packed full of flavour.  I can have it at any time of the day.

What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?
Eat a nice meal, listen to some good music, go for a walk, and read a thoughtful book.

What energizes you outside of work?
Reading, whether it is fiction or non-fiction work as it helps to reset and reframe my mindset away from work.

What’s a trip that changed you, and why?
Attending StarFest at Coonabarabran last year served as a nice reminder of the breathtaking beauty that lies within the dark skies of regional Australia.  It was also inspiring to see people with a shared passion come together and discuss their personal and professional interests.

What’s one of your favourite memories from the past year?
Joining a jewellery-making class and being able to craft a tangible item for the first time in a while.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Tony Leung.  He can convey everything I feel with just one look.

Kerin Jitla

Why did you become a lawyer?
I found my passion for immigration law at a young age – perhaps it cultivated from a consistent urge to help people like my grandparents who themselves were migrants and faced numerous struggles on their journey to Australia.

The best part of your job?
I’d say the best part is helping people.  Whether that’s by helping them reconnect with their families, helping businesses grow and source the right talent or helping someone fulfil their dreams of coming to Australia to study, work or create a better future for themselves and/or their families.  I love that I am playing a crucial part in the lives of so many people and helping them for the better.

If you could write a book about your life, what would the title be and why?
Kerin, The Adventures of – I would write about all the amazing travel adventures I’ve been privileged enough to embark on over the past several years and all of the things I have learnt along the way.

What advice would you give to your teenage self?
Live in the moment, for there is nothing like the present.  We are constantly chasing our dreams – as a teenager, I couldn’t wait to finish school and go to university.  Whilst at university I couldn’t wait to finish my studies and start working, then travelling, then marriage, then kids and the list goes on.  During this constant phase of chasing, we forget to live in the present and appreciate where we are now and how badly we wanted to get there – so soak it up and live your best life in that moment because we will never get that time again!

Favourite food?
Indian food of course!  I also love Italian – pizzas, pasta and risotto and Mexican as well.

What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?
Step away from the situation and take a few deep breaths.  Find a distraction that will lighten my mood and then come back to address the reason I had a bad moment/day and hopefully, I feel differently about it after looking at it from a calmer/happier perspective.

What energizes you outside of work?
I love spending quality time with my kids, my family and my friends.  Just being out and about and exploring.

What’s a trip that changed you, and why?
I’d say every time I travel, I appreciate the little things in life a little bit more.  Watching people live in different parts of the world is an amazing and timeless experience.  It changes the way we see the world and how we see ourselves.  Just being present and soaking in our surroundings is such a magical journey – you learn to appreciate the little things and life in general.

What’s one of your favourite memories from the past year?
The fondest memories I have over the past year are with my kids and I am so grateful that I got to spend all that time with them in these precious childhood years where they learn and grow the most.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Nobody other than my husband – I hope! 😉
