Australia is about to roll out a new visa pathway for high-calibre talent – the National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) – replacing the existing Global Talent Visa. This visa will offer direct permanent residency to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in their field. It will be available by invitation only, and applications are expected to open before the end of 2024.

Key details of the National Innovation Visa

  1. Targeted for High-Calibre Talent:
The visa will attract a broad range of individuals with exceptional skills and international recognition, including:

    1. Researchers & Thought Leaders: Global leaders in academia, with significant publication records and high citation rates.
    2. Entrepreneurs: Established and emerging entrepreneurs, particularly those with insights from successful State and Territory-led initiatives.
    3. Innovative Investors: Individuals making quality investments with a focus on impact, not just financial thresholds.
    4. Athletes & Creatives: Those who represent Australia internationally in sports, the arts, or other creative fields.
  2. Invitation-Only Process:
Applicants will be invited to apply through an Expression of Interest (EOI). This helps to streamline the selection process and ensures that only the most outstanding and exceptionally talented individuals are chosen.
  3. Permanent Residency Pathway:
This visa provides a direct route to permanent residency.
  4. Nomination via Approved Form 1000:
Applicants must be nominated using an approved Form 1000. The nominator will be responsible for vouching for the applicant’s credentials and demonstrating their suitability for the National Innovation Visa.
  5. English Language Requirement:
Applicants must demonstrate functional English, or they will need to pay a second Visa Application Charge (VAC).
  6. No Age Limits or Occupation Restrictions:
The visa has no age limits or occupation restrictions. This broad approach helps ensure that the visa is accessible to individuals from a wide range of industries and backgrounds.
